What a scorching garden club it was this week but that did not stop our avid gardeners! We pottered around, digging up potatoes, picked peas and even harvested the garlic. We made some signs in the shade and gave everything a good water! We also found a sycamore moth caterpillar who looked quite spectacular! Judy brought in a teasel plant and taught us that the plant can collect rain water in the cup-like receptacles that form where leaves join the stem. This structure may perform the function of preventing sap-sucking insects such as aphids from climbing the stem. These in turn may also be used to collect the nutrients from any animal matter that dies within them, making them a form of protocarnivorous plant! Wow!! Every day's a school day! Learning so much and having fun at the same time
