Maths

Intent

At Calmore Junior School, our mathematics curriculum is designed to equip all pupils with the knowledge, skills and confidence to succeed in school and in everyday life. We aim for children to:

  • Develop a deep understanding of number, calculation, and mathematical concepts.

  • Become fluent in the fundamentals of maths, including mental arithmetic and times tables.

  • Apply their knowledge to reasoning, problem-solving and real-life contexts.

  • Build resilience and confidence in tackling mathematical challenges.

  • Foster a love of mathematics, encouraging curiosity and enjoyment.

Our curriculum ensures progression by carefully sequencing learning so that children master core concepts before moving to more complex ideas. We aim to provide all pupils, including disadvantaged and SEND learners, with equitable access to high-quality mathematical learning.

Implementation

  • Mastery Approach: Maths is taught using a mastery approach, ensuring children develop secure understanding before moving on. Lessons combine practical, pictorial and abstract methods.

  • Lesson Structure: Each lesson includes clear modelling, guided practice, independent work, and opportunities to reason and problem-solve.

  • Differentiation: Activities are adapted to meet the needs of all learners. Additional support is provided for those who need it, while more able pupils are challenged with richer tasks.

  • Times Tables and Fluency: Regular practice and assessment ensure children develop fluency in multiplication, division, and key number facts.

  • Cross-Curricular Links: Maths is embedded across the curriculum, encouraging children to apply skills in science, geography, computing and real-world contexts.

  • Assessment: Teachers assess understanding through observation, formative assessments and structured tasks, using this information to inform planning and intervention.

Impact

By the end of each year, pupils are expected to:

  • Demonstrate confidence and competence in all areas of mathematics.

  • Apply mathematical reasoning and problem-solving skills effectively.

  • Retain key knowledge and recall facts fluently.

  • Show resilience and perseverance when tackling challenging problems.

  • Enjoy and value mathematics as a tool for learning and life.

The success of our maths curriculum is measured through:

  • Ongoing teacher assessments and pupil progress tracking.

  • Attainment in end-of-year assessments and national tests.

  • Pupil engagement, enjoyment, and confidence in using maths independently.

At Calmore Junior School, our mathematics curriculum ensures that all pupils develop a strong foundation for future learning while fostering a love for the subject that will support them beyond the classroom.
